Guest Musicians

Dick Taylor

Dick Taylor is our most regular guest and is a guitar legend.  Dick is a  founder member of the Rolling Stones and lead guitarist with The Pretty Things. He is an important figure in 1960s British rock as lead guitarist and frequent songwriter for the Pretty Things, and has deep ties to the general birth of the British blues-rock scene.

A teenage friend of Mick Jagger he attended the same grammar school in the London suburb Dartford, and began playing with Jagger in the early '60s in the group Little Boy Blue & the Blue Boys later re-named as the Rolling Stones.

Dick founded the Pretty Things with Phil May in 1962 and they continue to play in venues all over the world.

This photograph was part of an exhibition of “the top 100 influential guitarsts” at the Albert Hall in London.

Dick lives in Ventnor  on the Isle of Wight and was a founder member of the Hillmans Bluesband.

When he is available he plays with the band for special events on the Island and in mini tours to the mainland.

Phil Oswald

Phil also guests as lead guitarist and is a very experienced and talented musician. He has been playing on the Island since ’76 with  bands such as The Pump House Gang and The Choir. He has also played in several local line ups including The Blue Nuns, Martinez and The Monitors.

His roots are with the great of British Blues and RnB - The Stones, The Yardbirds, The Pretty Things, Them, The Animals, The Who ... as well as, of course, the American greats - Muddy waters, Howlin Wolf, Elmore James, Freddie King.

His favourite guitarist is Jimi Hendrix, as well as Jeff Beck and the flamenco style of Paco Pena.

Kevin Buxton

Kevin lives in the Northampton area; he is a singer/song writer, harmonica player, guitarist and acoustic roots promoter.

He was described recently as a writer and singer of  "Powerful, well-observed songs dealing with unusual subjects. With the observational skills and incisive language of Richard Thompson, Kevin Buxton is above all a songwriter with his own style and agenda. A breath of fresh air."

Kevin is a terrific  harmonica player and regularly guests with us on “harp” and vocals. He recently joined us for the Country Fair gigs at Highclere Castle and Romsey County Show.

Paul de Gallier

Paul is an exceptional drummer and percussionist who lives in Market Harborough. He has played in various bands and worked as a session musician in several major studios. This has led to him working with some fine singer/songwriters, entertainers and fellow musicians. These included a Snow Patrol collaboration and musicians from the tour of The Wall by Roger Walters.

Paul has dep'd for us on several tours and also on the Island. He has recently played with the band on the November 2015 tour to the Midlands.

Gary (GBH) Rawlins - Harmonica

Occasional band member Gary "Great Blues Harp" Rawlins warbles his way into the band whenever he visits the island with his family.

A guitarist from age 14, Gary has fond memories of jammin' with Hillmans front man 'Tony Minx' in his kitchen and went on to play in a number of school boy bands (names too ludicrous to mention).

The Blues came a calling for GBH in 2010 when Tony (once again) thrust an old Hohner Blues Harp (key of D) into his hand and showed him which end to blow.

Inspired by such greats as Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Paul Lamb and the Kingsnakes as well as the legendary Magic Dick (J.Geils Band), Gary and the Harmonica are inseparable.
